In our sustainability vision, our commitment to environmental balance is directly related to operational excellence.

In our manufacturing and commercial operations in Brazil and abroad, we seek to reduce the use of natural resources through innovative processes and technologies. We strive to act ahead of the established targets and anticipate regulatory measures.

Our teams’ work is supported by multifunctional committees to ensure the dissemination of practices and evolution of goals. We use sustainability indicators to monitor performance along with strategic planning, in synergy with the Operations area. The main operations’ Environmental Management System is certified by the NBR ISO 14001:2015 standard.


We are aware of the need for innovation to meet sustainability-related challenges and constantly evolving demands. We are constantly adopting new habits in our daily activities, consistent with the role we play in being a benchmark in social and environmental responsibility in the pharmaceutical sector.

Water saved, reused and donated

Water is an essential input in the pharmaceutical industry and we dedicate a great deal of effort to reducing and optimizing its consumption with innovative projects and initiatives for water efficiency. The water reuse system was initiated at the Itapevi Unit in 2012, and was widely adopted at the Ribeirão Preto Unit in 2016. Over the years, both have undergone successive improvement processes and the adoption of new technologies, such as the reverse osmosis filtration process.

In 2013, we implemented a public-private partnership to donate surplus reuse water. We rely on the support of Grupo Estre in the process, as well as the Itapevi and Jandira Municipal Governments, which use this resource for several different non-potable activities.


Investments in renewable sources

Achieving energy efficiency targets necessarily pervades the path of reducing consumption and the increasingly widespread use of renewable energy sources.

We boldly invested in a photovoltaic power generation system at the Itapevi Unit, with over 5,000 solar panels installed. In 2018, we had already invested around BRL 8.2 million in this technology, which is still scarce throughout the country.


Disruptive technology to connect the entire chain

We have made major progress in recent years toward improving the management of waste generated in the production process. Backed by high-impact disruptive technologies, we deployed the online PlataformaVerdeTM cloud system that handles all waste management from the point of generation to the receiver.

By connecting the generator, transporters and receivers, and integrating them into the same online system, the program enables greater traceability for organic and hazardous waste, eliminating the risk of diversion and making the whole process safer and more robust.


Hazardous waste

Hazardous waste is treated in a priority manner by the co-processing method, considered less polluting because it uses cement kilns for the burning process, with reuse of the released energy. Targets set to improve hazardous waste disposal have resulted in 94% of the current volume being sent for co-processing.


Recyclable waste and reuse

All recyclable waste disposed of in our facilities is reused through waste separation and sent to recycling companies. Our units have recycling bins, which are intended for the correct separation of waste.

In addition to regular educational campaigns with our employees to strengthen the practice of proper disposal, the revenue from selling the company’s recyclable waste is reverted to social and environmental projects, such as De Mãos Dadas com a Escola [Hand in Hand with the School], where the funds raised are used to purchase school supply kits and reimburse textbooks and workbooks for our employees’ children.


Zero Landfill

We aim to eliminate 100% of non-recyclable waste disposal to landfills by 2020, throughout all operations in Brazil. As a part of this goal, the composting process has already been implemented in all Brazilian units. In recent years, we have reduced over 50% of the volume of waste sent to landfills.


Actions on multiple fronts for a complex issue

We developed the greenhouse gas inventory according to the GHG Protocol methodology. The surveys assist in the development of internal policies to reduce air emissions, for example, with the increasing use of renewable energy sources and programs such as Zero Landfill.


Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The Corporate Fuel Consumption Policy states that the cars used by the Sales Force must be fueled using a ratio of 75% ethanol and 25% gasoline. Since it was instituted in 2009, the adoption of the policy has resulted in a 57% reduction in CO2 emissions by the company’s fleet.

Environmental recovery We performed environmental recovery work near the Taiaçupeba dam in Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo, with the maintenance of over 48,000 trees under the Environmental Recovery Commitment Agreement signed between Eurofarma and Cetesb. Our commitment extends through 2020 to ensure the strong development of the species and full recovery of the area.


Organic Garden

With a project that joins sustainability, environmental education and health, the company built an Organic Garden in an area of 1,000 m2 at the Itapevi Unit, where vegetables are being grown sustainably and without the use of pesticides.

The beds were built with ecological bricks and a drip irrigation system, so the vegetables grow without competing with weeds and biodiversity contributes to insects not becoming pests and pollinators doing their work.

Our employees can exchange recyclable material for vegetables. The garden has the capacity to produce about 2,600 vegetables per month.


Zero Paper Program

The Zero Paper program aims to reduce the number of pages printed by establishing performance benchmarks. Given the importance of the issue, we have established the Zero Paper Committee, which discusses improvements to optimize and eliminate printing and reduce paper consumption.


Eco Bike

In our Itapevi Unit, we provide employees with eight stations containing common, cargo and electric bikes for internal use. The initiative promotes environmental awareness and better health through physical activity, in addition to caring for the environment by reducing transportation using polluting fuels.


Pioneer in the pharmaceutical industry with the +Verde seal

As a result of a pioneering initiative in the pharmaceutical sector, Eurofarma’s first products with the +Verde seal came to market in 2018. This seal identifies drugs with innovative actions capable of generating a positive impact throughout the chain and the environment.

One of the advantages of products with the +Verde seal is the inner blister packaging, which presents a unique methodology worldwide developed by Eurofarma and validated by Anvisa for domestic decontamination. The seal also attests to the use of 30% recycled material in the outer packaging (cartridge), as well as extra precautions observed in the production process, such as the economy of inputs and impact control, as well as final consumer awareness on proper disposal.

Retorna Machine

Retorna Machine is an innovative and technological means of reverse logistics for post-consumer PET bottles, aluminum and steel cans and long-life containers.

Benefits for employees who join the program include power bill bonuses, transportation voucher credits, bookstore discounts and donations to philanthropic institutions, among others. All material is collected by a partner company in this initiative and sent to waste picker cooperatives and recycling companies.


Proper Disposal Program

The purpose of this pioneer project in the pharmaceutical industry is to raise the population’s awareness on the importance of proper disposal for primary packaging, which is packaging that comes in direct contact with the drug, expired medication and materials such as needles and vials, through disposal locations spread across several cities in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.

In addition, 100% of our secondary packaging (boxes or cartridges) is provided to the market with guidance on how to properly dispose of waste that did not come into direct contact with the medication. The +Verde products – Astro® and Selene® – also contain information on how they should be decontaminated at home prior to being separated for proper recycling.
